Materials & hallmark

Antique Wash is a ring in 18k yellow gold — 750‰, the legal minimum title of gold in France. The alloy is 75% gold, 20% copper and 5% silver, and the surface is worked twice: hammered, then brushed to a matte finish.

Because the ring weighs 4 g — above the 3 g threshold — it carries the eagle's head fineness punch struck inside a hexagon, together with the maker's responsibility punch. Two punches, struck in Paris, are your guarantee that the metal is what we say it is.

The double finish is deliberate: the hammer blows give the surface life, and the brushing keeps it quiet. The ring does not shout.

The price of the metal

Gold is quoted at 4 085.40 USD per ounce on 22 October 2026, which works out to about 87.70 € per gram of 18k gold. At that rate, the metal in your Antique Wash is 4 g × 87.70 € = 350.80 €.

The remaining 109.20 € is the making — hammering, brushing, the hallmarks, and the hours at the bench. We publish the price of the metal because we want the rest of the price to be legible too.

Care

  • Do not use a polishing cloth or an abrasive pad — they would shine the brushed surface and erase the antique wash. Warm soapy water and a soft brush are all it needs.
  • Dry with a soft cloth and pat, rather than rub, so the brushed grain stays even.
  • The matte surface hides wear well, but chlorine and household bleach will dull it — remove the ring before swimming or cleaning.

The ring that does not shout pairs best with forged links and a flat band.

Goldsmith's bench in the Emily Rose Paris atelier, tools laid out beside a half-finished piece

Made in the Paris atelier

Antique Wash is made in our atelier at 14 rue de Saintonge, in the Marais — one pair of hands from the first bar of gold to the last brush stroke.

Lost-wax casting

The ring is cast as a solid band from recycled 750‰ gold using the lost-wax process, an ancient method that leaves no seam.

Hammering and brushing

The surface is hammered by hand, then brushed to a matte finish — the two passes that give the ring its lived-in look.

Polishing and hallmarking

The ring is washed, lightly finished, and struck with the eagle's head and responsibility punches before it is checked against the weight we print.
